Veterans Benefits

  • Non-disabled veterans: 5 points for Open Competitive Exams and 2.5 points for Promotional Exams.
  • Disabled veterans: 10 points for Open Competitive Exams and 5 points for Promotional Exams.
  • Military personnel are permitted to take a make-up exam if they are on active duty at the time of the police test.
  • 30 paid leave days for military duty (Reserve and National Guard) annually.
  • Additional 5 paid military sick days each calendar year pursuant to Local Law No. 20-2020 for health related services related to duty in a combat theater or combat zone of operations.
  • Military service buy back – up to 3 years of credit towards retirement.
  • Job protection and security under federal USERRA Law and NYS Military Law.
  • Civil service exam fee is waived for veterans residing in Suffolk County.
  • Maximum age on the date of the written exam is 34, however, applicants with active military duty, as defined in Section 243 (10-a) of the New York State Military Law, may deduct up to seven years from their age to meet the maximum age requirement. Veterans with seven years of active duty can be up to 41 years old on the date of the exam.
